Tackling Water Scarcity in Mandera County: Building Resilience Through Community Action
In the heart of Mandera County, where prolonged droughts and unpredictable rainfall have become the new normal, access to safe and reliable water remains one of the greatest challenges facing our communities. For many families, the struggle to find clean water means walking long distances under the scorching sun — time that could otherwise be spent on education, work, or family care.
At Wargadud Environmental Protection Group (WEPG), we believe that every drop counts. Our mission goes beyond simply addressing the symptoms of water scarcity; we are working to create lasting, community-led solutions that build resilience in the face of a changing climate.
Through partnerships with local leaders, schools, and international organizations, WEPG has initiated several water-focused projects aimed at improving access and promoting sustainability. These include:
Rehabilitation of Existing Water Points: Repairing broken boreholes and hand pumps to ensure functionality and reduce waterborne diseases.
Rainwater Harvesting Initiatives: Supporting households and schools to collect and store rainwater during the wet season for use during dry periods.
Awareness and Capacity Building: Educating communities on water conservation, hygiene practices, and sustainable resource management.
Each of these initiatives brings us closer to a future where families no longer have to suffer due to lack of water. Our approach combines community participation, environmental protection, and innovation to secure clean water for all.
But our journey is far from over. As climate change continues to intensify drought cycles in Northern Kenya, collective action and partnership are more important than ever.
